Two attackers fired on the KPS vehicle and wounded Jankovic in the arm. He was taken to a hospital in Pristina and is in stable condition.
Jankovic has recently been appointed regional commander for Gnjilane and is the only Serb occupying such a high post.
This is the second attack this month on Serbs who are in the Kosovo police. During the previous attack of September 9 near Strpce Sasa Durlevic was wounded.
Head of the Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija Sanda Raskovic-Ivic harshly condemned the attack on the regional commander of KPS Dejan Jankovic.
It has been confirmed once again that basic standards of safety and protection of human life in Kosovo-Metohija are not fulfilled, she said.
Commenting the attack on Jankovic, Vice President of the Coordinating Centre Milorad Todorovic said that the international community does not have the audacity to deal with extremism in Kosovo.
The disrespect of human rights of Serbs in the province is not a hindrance to the international community to talk about the Kosovo ethnic-Albanians’ priority– their status, Todorovic concluded.
Serbia-Montenegrin Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Draskovic said that the attack on Jankovic is a continuation of ethnic-Albanian extremists’ strategy to achieve independent and ethnically clean Kosovo through terrorism and crime on Serbs.
They will achieve neither because at the UN summit in New York not long ago, it was decided that the international organisation applies all means in fighting terrorism, regardless of who and where commits such acts or with what political aim, Draskovic added.
