The Serbian parliament approved today a set of judiciary bills, including changes and amendments to the Law on judges, Law on public prosecutor’s office, and Law on the High Judiciary Council. Minister of Justice Zoran Stojkovic said changes adopted would eliminate the possibility for the executive power to decide on courts.
Stojkovic said the changes were necessary due to the European Union’s demands for bringing the domestic regulations into line with European standards and for independence of courts and prosecutors.
He said that results of these changes would depend on the efficiency of courts.
The changes were backed by 128 deputies, while 23 were opposed.
