The memorial service at the St. Marko Church in Belgrade was attended by several thousand Serbs from Croatia, families of those killed and missing, as well as by Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, Serbian government members and Serbian President Boris Tadic.
Patriarch Pavle said that the sorrow is very deep, and that it would have been impossible to overcome had the victims gone to conquer foreign lands rather than just having been expelled from the land where their ancestors had lived for hundreds of years.
The memorial service was held on the 10th anniversary of the operation Oluja, which caused the exodus of more than 200,000 Serbs from Croatia.
The families of the missing persons in the operation Oluja laid roses in front of the Croatian Embassy in Belgrade and handed over a list of 2,627 names of Serbs that went missing between 1991 and 1995, requesting the embassy’s help in finding their remains.
