Vucic said that Sretenje is the day when we remember our famous ancestors, when the citizens meet with the past, with themselves and with the present.
Celebrating this day we celebrate two sacred values for which our ancestors had fought - celebrating freedom and celebrating the Serbian state, the President of the Republic underlined.
He recalled that in the distant 1804, not far from the place where this ceremony is being held, the most prominent Serbs of Sumadija gathered and decided to rise against the Ottoman rule, thus igniting a flame that was so large and powerful to lighten the path to the Serbs and others around us who lived in slavery.
Although the rebellion was suppressed, nothing could stand in its way any longer.
Vucic pointed out that Serbia is heading towards EU membership, but does not neglect its friendship with Russia, China and others.
The ceremony was attended by ministers in the government of Serbia, President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik, members of the diplomatic corps, the Serbian Armed Forces and a large number of citizens.
Before the commencement of the state ceremony, Patriarch Irinej of Serbia served the liturgy.
Today Serbia marks Sretenje – the Statehood Day in memory of 15 February 1804, when the First Serbian Uprising began in Orasac and the same day in 1835, when the first Serbian Constitution was adopted.
