Representatives of OSCE and UNHCR Alister Livingston and Mateus Beraki, president of southern Kosovska Mitrovica municipality Faruk Spahiju and UNMIK regional representative for northern Kosovo Rashid Ahmed signed today an agreement on return of members of the Roma ethnic community to the southern part of Kosovska Mitrovica.
This document refers to return of Roma to a neighbourhood in the southern part of the city where approximately 8,000 Roma lived before 1999.
Spahiju said that the signing of the agreement is a very important step because all ethnic communities who lived in Kosovo before the 1999 conflict must return, the Tanjug news agency reported.
The agreement on the return of Roma should pave the way for a solution of the problem of all displaced persons, he said and added that Kosovska Mitrovica is the most complex issue in that respect.
Rashid Ahmed said that this agreement also includes the return of Roma who left for Serbia-Montenegro and explained that this document is the most major return project made so far.
