Minister of Economy Zeljko Sertic spoke today with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Zuzana Murgasova, on privatisation, the problems of companies in restructuring and state-owned public companies.
The Ministry of Economy said that Sertic said that the privatisation process is faced with difficulties caused by legal problems, primarily the judicial processes and restitution.
He noted that some companies accumulated huge debts, adding that 50 companies from the portfolio of the Privatisation Agency owe more than €4 billion.
The Minister of Economy pointed out that so far published calls have been announced for the privatisation of 12 companies, and that another 15 will be announced by the end of May.
Sertic informed the IMF mission that the fate of about 340 companies scheduled for privatisation will be known by 1 July.
The IMF mission will in the coming days, until 12 May, discuss the first revision of the three-year arrangement.
The IMF approved the precautionary arrangement to Serbia on 23 February, which includes structural reforms and austerity measures in order to reduce the budget deficit, the statement added.
