Trans-Balkan Corridor most important project for electricity transmission in region

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović attended today the start of works on the construction of the third section of the Trans-Balkan Corridor for electricity transmission, stating that this is the most important project in the transmission system not only in Serbia, but also in Southeast Europe.

Đedović Handanović explained that work is beginning on the third section of the Trans-Balkan Corridor from Obrenovac to Bajina Bašta, 109 kilometres long.

She emphasised that this project, in which approximately €100 million will be invested, increases the security of supply to consumers in western Serbia and strengthens interconnections with neighbouring countries.

General Director of the Serbian national transmission system operator company Elektromreža Srbije Jelena Matejić said that the value of the construction of the entire Trans-Balkan Corridor is more than €200 million, which includes 323 kilometres of 400 kV transmission lines, raising the voltage levels of two substations and upgrading transmission lines in three substations.

Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Emmanuele Giaufret noted that the EU has provided a total donation of €38.3 million for the Trans-Balkan Corridor project, of which €18.9 million is the donation for the third section.

He recalled that the European Union has allocated one billion euros for the Serbian energy sector since 2000, in order to make it stronger and more stable.
