Kristalina Georgieva
Georgieva explained at a press conference in Brussels that Serbia, as a EU candidate country, is entitled to assistance from the EU Solidarity Fund in the amount of up to €1 billion per year.
She added that European Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule is also seeking a way to set aside additional funds for Serbia from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA), while the accession to assistance funds is much more complicated in case of Bosnia-Herzegovina which does not have candidate status.
Georgieva recalled that the European Commission responded as soon as it received a request from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina and immediately sent high-capacity water pumps, helicopters, boats and 450 volunteers from EU member states.
Georgieva said that she spoke on the phone with Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic today to inquire about the current situation in the country.
Apart from the assistance from IPA funds and the EU Solidarity Fund, Serbia can also count on bilateral assistance from the member states, she confirmed.
