Documentary films and video-recordings by RTS journalist Svetlana Vukmirovic

Svetlana Vukmirovic, born October 4, 1974 in Pristina, is an RTS journalist. She began her career in journalism more than 10 years ago, and was working at TV Pristina until June 1999, when she was forced to leave with her colleagues. She returned to Kosovo-Metohija in October of the same year, to the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica. From 2001 she has been working as a journalist for RTS Belgrade, where she is actively following the conditions and problems in the southern Serbian province. In 2000 she won the annual RTS award for professional and courageous reportage from Kosovo-Metohija, and participated in the festival at Moscow with her documentary films.

"Refugee centres in Kosovo-Metohija" (2005 - 2006, duration: 7 minutes)

Few know that there are refugee centres in Kosovo-Metohija still, where exiled Serbs from all parts of the Serbian southern province live. Many families can hardly survive in tin containers or in old hotels. In Brezovica alone, there are over 800 internally displaced Serbs from Urosevac, Prizren, Pristina, Kacanik, Klina and other places in Kosovo-Metohija who are waiting to return to their homes.

"Caglavica after March 17, 2004" (2005 - 2006, 8 minutes)

With the arrival of UNMIK and KFOR to Kosovo-Metohija in June 1999, over 40,000 Serbs were exiled from Pristina. The village of Caglavica is only 3 km away from Pristina, but many Serbs who live there have not seen their city for eight years. When it gets dark, they are on guard, aware that they might be attacked again. They witnessed what happened to them on March 17, 2004. The attacks against them have not stopped.

"Obilic after March 17, 2004" (2005 - 2006, 7 minutes)

Until June 1999, Obilic was inhabited by 8,000 Serbs and Roma. Their houses were burnt down and they became refugees in their own country. Those Serbs who remained live in tin containers and rented rooms in the vicinity of their houses to which they cannot return as no one can guarantee their safety.

"Kosovo Polje after March 17, 2004" (2005 - 2006, 2 minutes)

In June 1999, over 18,000 Serbs were exiled from Kosovo Polje in two days. The Serb population in Kosovo Polje was faced with a new pogrom on March 17, 2004, when houses were burning and Albanian extremists destroyed everything that had been built for decades. Many Kosovo Serbs remained homeless; many even refuse to see their suffering, but the picture of violence is documented and cannot be avoided.

“Muslim Community in Sredacka Zupa" (June 2006, 21 minutes)

Nearly 10,000 Muslims live at the foothills of Mt. Sar near Prizren. A visit by a news team from Radio Television Serbia surprised them. They told the team about living conditions in their area. According to some estimates, nearly 50,000 Muslims live in Kosovo-Metohija, in Sredacka Zupa, near Pec, Vitomirica and Kosovska Mitrovica. There is also a small number of Muslims in Pristina.

“Goranis - Highlanders without land” (September 2005, 22 minutes)

This documentary film is about the Gorani, an ethnic minority living in a remote area of Kosovo-Metohija which borders with Albania and Macedonia. This area known as Gora and Dragas is extremely unsafe since the border towards Albania is open and criminal groups frequently enter Gorani villages and seize property; bomb attacks and other forms of violence are not uncommon. Since the arrival of the UNMIK and the KFOR on June 10, 1999, some 8,000 Gorani left their homes, and more than 20 were kidnapped and killed.

“Kidnapped and murdered” (April 2006, 25 minutes)

The uncertainty, suffering and pain in the hearts of families of kidnapped Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija. The kidnapping of Serbs in the southern Serbian province began as early as 1998. Remains of bodies of killed Serbs who were kidnapped in 1998 and 1999 in Orahovac, Prizren, Gnjilane and other areas in Kosovo-Metohija are regularly handed over at the administrative border-crossing Merdare.

"I do not renounce to Prizren" (March 2005, 19 minutes)

A group of 47 Serbs returns with their own initiative to the Metohija village Novake near Prizren on March 14, 2003. After the persecution in June 1999, 62 houses have been rebuilt, and those who have returned live from farming and the help given by the Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija …

"Destroyed cemetery in Babljak" (April 2005, 3 minutes)

In the mixed community of the ethnic-Albanian and Serb village, Serbs return to thresholds of completely torn down houses, where neighbours have not guarded homes. And apart from homes, the dead too had no peace…

"Cemetery on fire in village Donja Dubnica" (September 2004, 2 minutes)

A village from where in the last 20 years the entire Serb population has left. Only graves remain, which ethnic-Albanian extremists desecrated and burnt in several phases…

"Desecrated monuments in village Novake" (March 2005, 2 minutes)

The desecrated graveyard in the village Novake, Serbs who have returned and have been here for more than two years are trying to protect renovations from new desecration…

"Wasteland in Srpski Babus" (April 2005, 3 minutes)

From June 1999 the Serb village has been flattened to the ground. The Serbian Orthodox Church in the village has also been ruined, and all houses are demolished and everything has been done to eliminate any clue that more than 300 hundred Serb families used to live here…

"Metohian burden" (December 2004, 21 minutes)

Serbs of Metohija live in a ghetto and wonder if there is any similar case elsewhere in Europe. Apart from threatened Serbs in the villages of Metohija, the monastic element of the Serbian Orthodox Church is also in danger from increasing attacks by ethnic-Albanian extremists…

"Wounded peony" (June 2004, 26 minutes)

An account of the suffering of Serbs of Kosovo-Metohija after the two-day pogrom of March 17-18, 2004. In Sirinickoj Zupi, father and son, Dobri and Borko Stolic were murdered, and after everything they went through from the arrival of UNMIK and KFOR in June 1999, 12 thousand Serbs in Sirinickoj Zupi are fighting for survival…
