Head of the Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija Nebojsa Covic spoke today in Belgrade with associates, advisors and analysts of US congressmen on the attitude of Belgrade and Kosovo Serbs towards interim institutions of self-rule in the province.
In the Coordinating Centre’s statement, it is noted that associates of influential US congressmen were especially interested in concrete ways in which the US could help Belgrade cope with the political and security situation in Kosovo-Metohija.
Stressing that they do not convey positions of the official US Congress, the guests from Washington were especially interested in Covic's opinion on the initiatives for an independent Kosovo launched by several congressmen.
Starting from the official positions and documents of the UN, Belgrade and agreements of Serbia-Montenegro and UNMIK, Covic said that Kosovo's independence would not only cause immediate and long-lasting consequences in Serbia and the region, but also have detriment to overall international relations as well.
He warned about the attempts of using the cooperation of Serbs in the interim institutions in Kosovo-Metohija as their interim participation on the path of independence.
The head of the Coordinating Centre provided the examples of cooperation of Belgrade and Washington in southern Serbia and said that such positive experiences and practical initiatives could be very useful in the case of Kosovo-Metohija as well, it is said in the statement released by the Coordinating Centre.
