Kostunica pointed out that the constitution is not only society’s essential need, but also one of the crucial conditions for EU integration. He went on to say that unity, freedom and constitutionality were the guidelines of the Serbian revolution, which should serve as a framework of further development of the Serbian statehood.
“Just like we need to be composed and wise when adopting the new constitution, we must act so in preserving Kosovo-Metohija. We must be resolute in that deed, as Albanian secessionists and their international aides count on our possible hesitation as regards to this state issue”, the Prime Minister stressed.
Kostunica said that resolve must be expressed in the effort to preserve the state union of Serbia-Montenegro, adding that we can have a European future only if it be authentically ours. “Let the Sretenje [Visitation of the Virgin, February 15] always reminds us of that. Dear friends, citizens of Serbia, let us continue to build our state on the deep foundations of our progressive Serbia”, said Kostunica.
The ceremony in Maricevica Jaruga was attended by Serbian government officials, the Karadjordjevic royal family and several hundreds of citizens. The programme included a drama and music performance “Vostanije”, as well as a service in the memory of Karadjordje Petrovic, the leader of the First Serbian Uprising (1804), and all soldiers who were killed in the uprising.
Sretenje was proclaimed Serbian Statehood Day in 2001. On this day, Serbia marks the anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising (1804), under Karadjordje Petrovic’s leadership, as well as proclamation of the 1835 Constitution, the first one in Serbia.
A central ceremony will also take place in Kragujevac where the first Serbian constitution was proclaimed 170 years ago.
