Minister Ilic visited Batrovci together with Croatian Ambassador to Belgrade Tonci Stancic and Serbian Minister of Diaspora Vojislav Vukcevic. He said that the European Union addressed serious criticism to the slowness of traffic at the border crossings through Serbia and stressed that Europe will not tolerate bottlenecks.
The Minister said that Batrovci is a very busy crossing, with almost 10,000 cars, 1,000 freight vehicles and 30,000 people passing through it every day. He added that the project of reconstruction has already been prepared and that it envisages that the crossing has 10 lanes, eight for cars and two for buses, with a separate lane for trucks offered as well.
Stancic said that the Croatian side will need a broadening of 25 kilometres of the road leading to the crossing in order to make a single highway from Ljubljana to Nis by summer 2006.
He said that Croatia and Serbia-Montenegro can do much more to create an efficient crossing, which also has a great symbolic importance for bilateral relations of the two countries.
The Croatian Ambassador said that Batrovci is one of the first examples of successful cooperation of the two countries, taking into account that the first mine clearance was made there. The equipping of the crossing for bilateral and transit transport is also in plan, in order to prevent it from being a bottleneck in the connection of southern and western Europe.
The Minister of Diaspora said that people from Diaspora frequently pass through Batrovac and there is great interest in a simplifying and quickening of the procedure at the border crossing.
After Batrovac, Ilic, Stancic and Vukcevic will visit the border crossing of Tovarnik.
