Antonione stressed that 2005 is a crucial year and voiced hope that Serbia, as the leading factor of prosperity and stability in the region, will meet all challenges and accelerate its process of European integration. He stressed that Italy is offering its full support to the realisation of the proposed agenda of the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister, which envisages Serbia's integration in the European Union by 2012.
Discussing the issue of Kosovo-Metohija, Labus said that the current situation in the province is intolerable and gave some examples of malfunctioning of the administration, such as the issue of termination of supply of electrical energy to the Serbian population. He also pointed to the extremely difficult economic situation in the province, saying that imports represent 200 percent of GDP.
Labus and Antonione agreed that in order to find the best possible solution for Kosovo and Metohija, it is necessary to secure Belgrade's active participation in the negotiations on the standards and the province's status.
Announcing the visit of Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini to Serbia-Montenegro in late February, Antonione highlighted the importance of further successful cooperation between Italy and Serbia.
