Minister of Education and Science Zarko Obradovic today expressed satisfaction with the fact that our country has the Astronomical Observatory as a scientific institution with such a long tradition, adding that it confirms that science is rooted in our society.
Obradovic and President of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences Nikola Hajdin attended the ceremony marking the 125th anniversary of the Belgrade Observatory.
Director of the Observatory Zoran Knezevic reminded that this is a dual anniversary – 125 years since the establishment of the observatory and 80 years since it is located in the municipality of Zvezdara.
Knezevic said that the Belgrade Astronomical Observatory was founded by Milan Nedeljkovic in 1887 and noted that at the time of establishment it had only three instruments.
He said the observatory gradually developed in the early 20th century, and that its present-day building in Zvezdara was built in the period from 1929 to 1932.
The municipality of Zvezdara got its name by the observatory, as its previous name was Veliki Vracar, he said.
Knezevic said that the third phase of development begins in 1960, when scientific works began.
He stressed that the Astronomical Observatory has 60 employees, of whom 40 are researchers, adding that last year it generated revenue of RSD 103 million.
