Slobodan Samardzic
After last night's meeting with Solana and his Advisor Stefan Lehne, Samardzic told the Tanjug news agency that an agreement was not reached a week ago because Belgrade firmly holds the position that both member states must respect the Constitutional Charter.
Belgrade's line is that, regardless of the solution, the Constitutional Charter must be respected and voiced hope that a solution will be found to the mutual satisfaction of Belgrade and Brussels, and with the consent of Podgorica.
"I can only say that we were flexible to the greatest extent possible. We gave a proposal that the EU would surely have to accept, taking into account not only the interest of Montenegro, that is, its leadership, to call a referendum one day, but also the interest of Serbia to preserve stability in the Balkans", Samardzic said.
Commenting on the problem of cooperation with The Hague Tribunal, Samardzic said that the Serbian government is aware that it is a general condition, but is also aware of difficulties in the solution of that problem in one stroke. "The EU understands our policy, it even respects it, but it is impatient to see the results. The results exist, they are minimum, but can be bigger. The government will do everything to achieve greater results and at the same time not to cause counter reactions in the domestic public," Samardzic stressed.
