Milan Parivodic
Parivodic, who is on a two-day visit to EU officials in Brussels, told BBC radio today that the agreement is an important step towards the EU especially given that the feasibility study is about to be conducted.
The minister said that the agreement, after it is initialled today, will be translated into the 20 EU languages so as to undergo the necessary procedure, adding that it is realistic to expect that it will be signed in February 2005.
Parivodic stressed that after the signing, a procedure for its ratification will be initiated in the Serbian parliament and he expressed conviction that implementation will begin on April 1 or May 1 at the latest.
The agreement will be initialled by Assistant Minister of International Economic Relations Ana Blagojevic, on behalf of Serbia, and one of the European Commission’s directors, on behalf of the EU.
Blagojevic told Tanjug news agency that the agreement will eliminate quotas for exports of Serbian textile to the EU as well as all duties on these products, on the condition that they are produced in Serbia.
Serbia, for its part, will be obliged to phase out import duties on EU textiles over the next three years at an annual pace of 25 percent, according to Blagojevic. By 2008, she said tariffs on EU textiles will be eliminated, adding that this measure has been agreed upon with the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.
