Predrag Bubalo
Attending a meeting entitled "The Politics of the New Balkan Economy," Bubalo said both Serbian governments that have followed the October 2000 democratic changes have worked to eliminate security problems in the Balkans, which he described as an obstacle to foreign investment.
According to Bubalo, the March violence against Kosovo-Metohija Serbs and the latest appointment of certain Kosovo officials particularly highlight existing security problems.
The Minister went on to say that Serbia has achieved political stability with the election of the parliament, the government and a democratic president, adding that privatised companies will lead Serbia on its path towards EU integration.
Bubalo also noted that Western Balkan countries, aspiring to join the EU, must observe their laws and constitutions, and show readiness to harmonise relations in the region.
European Commission Western Balkans Director Reinhard Priebe said that Western Balkan countries must have efficient and reliable state systems in order to speed up their accession to the EU.
Priebe also noted that Serbia-Montenegro is not setting a good example with its two economic and institutional systems, stressing that a speedy accession to the EU does not allow for "institutional extravaganza".
