Serbian Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic said today that the Ministry welcomes a project titled “Improving Preventive Health Services in Serbia", seeing as prevention, rather than solely treatment of diseases, is an emphasis in all European countries’ health care programs.
Milosavljevic told a press conference that the European Union, through the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR), has set aside €78 million in assistance for health care in Serbia in past four years. He specified that the project of improving preventive health care will be financed with €1.4 million over the next two years.
Head of the project Gvido Nuker said that priorities will inlcude early detection of cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. As support in the form of technical assistance, an additional €1 million will be set aside for the purchase of diagnostic equipment in medical centres.
As part of the project, the opening of a centre for preventive health services is planned, which will have remote offices in all 25 medical centres and 22 institutes covered by the project.
Nuker said that a programme of early detection of Down syndrome and other genetic anomalies will be introduced in these health centres, as well as support in the development of guides to good practices in preventive health services and the training of health workers in developing health promotion skills.
Representative of the EAR Belgrade office John White said that one of the project's goals will also be to raise awareness on the importance of preventive health services through promotion of healthy lifestyles and avoidance of health risks.
