Danson told a press conference at the Serbia-Montenegrin federation palace that he was informed that the health system in our country is ready for this potential threat.
The WHO warned last week about the avian influenza virus H5N1, which could cause pandemics of several million victims if no vaccine is found by March next year.
Some surprises cannot be predicted, Danson said, adding that national healthcare systems need to be ready. He also said that it is WHO’s duty to supervise the health situation globally.
Serbian Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic said that the agreement of Serbia-Montenegro on cooperation with the WHO in 2004 and 2005 envisions assistance for capacity building in the healthcare sector as a response to states of emergency.
According to him, when Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) struck Asia in March 2003, the Serbian health system showed ability to mobilise rapidly and to respond to unpredicted circumstances.
