At the session of the Parliamentary Committee on EU Integration, Djelic observed that once the preparations to answer the Questionnaire are completed, and the Questionnaire fulfilled, it will be returned to the European Commission in the first quarter of 2011.
After that, we may expect additional questions and the arrival of a technical mission, while the European Commission will declare its official opinion on Serbia’s EU candidacy in autumn next year, Djelic explained.
It is the government goal to open membership negotiations as soon as Serbia acquires candidate status. It is important for us to be told the exact date when these talks will begin, he outlined, adding that Serbia has already prepared the majority of answers to questions from the Questionnaires that had been sent to neighbouring countries.
Presenting a report on the implementation of Serbia’s National Programme of Integration in the EU (NPI) for the period July–September 2010, Djelic remarked that the plan has been fulfilled 121%.
He also stressed the role of the parliament in this process, calling upon MPs to step up the adoption of new laws and take part in a dialogue with European MPs, as it will help Serbia in its integration process.
He recalled that six laws, which are part of the NPI, are in parliamentary procedure, while another one is being prepared.
Djelic emphasised that full cooperation with the tribunal in The Hague is required for the continuation of the integration process, recalling that Croatia had to postpone accession talks until Ante Gotovina was located and sent to The Hague, although it had been granted candidate status.
He added that Serbia’s policy towards Kosovo-Metohija has not changed, but that the government must defend this goal in a different manner, noting that Serbia wants to reach a solution and dialogue is the best instrument to accomplish that.
