In an interview to today’s issue of daily Vecernje Novosti, Jeremic observed that for Kosovo Albanians perhaps now it is not the best moment for negotiations in view of political turmoil in Kosovo-Metohija, but that it is better for everyone that the dialogue starts as soon as possible.
He explained that Serbia believes that it is best to start with topics which are not controversial, such as establishing cooperation in the resolution of the problem of missing persons.
Success in the initial phase of negotiations would most likely have a positive effect for the later stages when we touch on more delicate issues. In any case, negotiations should be conducted by experts, and not top officials or politicians, Jeremic emphasised.
The Minister noted that negotiations on status need not be addressed directly in order to find solutions to problems that arise from the fact that the two sides have a fundamentally different view on sovereignty over Kosovo-Metohija.
The Serbian side will start from the fact that practical solutions must not be such as to recognise directly or indirectly the one-sidedly proclaimed independence. We expect that the starting position of Kosovo Albanians will be different. Both sides will be required to show constructiveness in order to reach compromise on all unresolved issues, Jeremic underlined.
He highlighted that Serbia will definitely not accept any solution which could be interpreted as recognition of independence and therefore it will not accept Serbia and Kosovo to be defined as two sovereign states.
We will continue to advocate reaching a historic compromise between Serbs and Albanians through negotiations, Jeremic pointed out.
