Speaking at a press conference addressing December 1, the World AIDS Day, Minister Milosavljevic, who is also a chairman of the Commission for the Fight Against HIV, said that society must fight that problem with combined forces. He said that the cooperation of the Ministry of Health and domestic and foreign NGOs is a positive example of that.
He said that the role of the media is very important in the fight against AIDS because they convey messages, but should also educate the young and at-risk groups. He said that there are enough medicines for treatment of AIDS in Serbia.
Milosavljevic said that the price of medicines for treatment of this disease, defined by a government decree, is being established through comparison of the prices of the same medicines in three neighbouring countries - Slovenia, Croatia and Italy.
Representative of the World Health Organisation in Belgrade Melita Jovanovic pointed out that Eastern Europe is the world's second most affected region in terms of AIDS patients increases.
She presented a campaign entitled "Reduce the Risk", as part of which a short promotional film was screened to mark the World AIDS Day.
The Commission for the Fight Against AIDS works in cooperation with the UN thematic group for HIV/AIDS in Serbia-Montenegro. It implements an UNDP programme, carries out education of the young, prepares a national AIDS strategy, and is engaged in many other activities.
