Serbian Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic opened today a harbour master’s office in Titel on the Tisa River, announcing a series of investment projects for development of waterway transport in Serbia.

Ilic said the ministry will provide funds to launch the construction of a passenger pier, which he said will facilitate economic growth in the region.
He said that the building of the passenger pier will be followed by a cargo pier and roads for getting to the port, adding that equipment for faster cargo loading will be installed as well, given that Europe insists on combined transport.
Ilic said that the closing of the Titel harbour master’s office in 1992 has slowed the region’s economic development. The office’s duties will include traffic safety on the rivers Tisa and Begej and part of the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal.
Ilic also said that an Israeli firm has offered the ministry a favorable loan to improve water supply in Banat, adding that the project would cost some €100 million. The loan would be repaid over 20 years through citizens’ payments for water consumption.
