Serbian Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic said today that the Agency for Telecommunications will be formed as an independent regulatory body by the end of the year.

Addressing the international expert conference Telfor 2004, he said that the telecommunication sector must not be influenced by politicians and politics, stressing that the Agency will be made up of experts suggested by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and other independent institutions.
He went on to say that the Ministry of Capital Investment will be taking large steps in the future so as to compensate for holes in the Serbian legislation and to harmonise those documents with European standards.
He also announced that a telecommunications development strategy will be adopted.
President of Telfor organisational board Djordje Paunovic said that 135 papers will be submitted at this year’s conference. He noted that modern telecommunications are a prerequisite for a modern information society.
He also said that it is necessary to adopt a telecommunications strategy in Serbia and solve ownership relations in order to conclude the restructuring process of telecommunication companies.
