Speaking at a professional meeting entitled "Outlooks of cooperation between Germany and Serbia-Montenegro in European frameworks", Ilic recalled that a €1 million Protocol on technical assistance was signed in the Belgrade Secretariat of the Interior in June this year. The major part of that donation has been directed to the Secretariat's drug trafficking department and the criminal technique department.
He pointed out that the MUP took big steps towards reaching European standards in combating organised crime with the aim of converting Serbia into a reliable partner in that field.
The Assistant Minister said that the state union takes an active part in curbing organised crime. In 2002, the Serbia-Montenegrin parliament passed the Law on organisation and jurisdiction of state bodies in the fight against organised crime, which was amended in April 2003. On the basis of that law, the Directorate for the Fight Against Organised Crime was established.
Ilic said that the institution of the special prosecutor for organised crime has also been introduced. This action gives legal importance to prosecution in the field.
According to Ilic, national legislation has been harmonised with the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, signed in Palermo, as well as with the Serbian Law on Criminal Proceedings and the Serbian Criminal Code.
The Assistant Minister said that the proper bodies in Serbia take measures to prevent and subvert terrorist acts and trace sources of financing of international terrorism, the Tanjug news agency reported.
