Addressing journalists at the parliament during a break in the session on Kosovo-Metohija, the President affirmed that Serbia will continue with its struggle, which means that it will apply new diplomatic actions and create new political ideas so that the resolution before the UN General Assembly, which is currently being written, offers new options for defending Serbia’s integrity.
He highlighted that the struggle for Kosovo-Metohija will not question Serbia’s European integration, or our peace-making policy in the region.
The Serbian President outlined that the situation in which Serbia found itself after the ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague regarding Kosovo-Metohija saying that the declaration of independence by provisional institutions of Kosovo was not in conflict with international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1244, must not be an excuse for new elections.
The elections will be held in 2012, as provided by law, Tadic confirmed.
Tadic reinforced that Serbia has not lost all its chances and that there is room for manoeuvre, especially in the UN General Assembly, to continue to fight for the preservation of Kosovo-Metohija.
The President stressed that Serbia will do everything to renew negotiations with Kosovo Albanians and to find a compromise solution in which one side would not lose everything, while the other would not gain all.
Tadic reiterated that Serbia will never recognise Kosovo's independence, which he also told international officials he had spoken with after the ICJ ruling.
He also clarified that Serbia will not allow “the so-called state of Kosovo to become a UN member.”
Commenting on whether the countries recognising the independence of Kosovo should be sued, Tadic reflected that he does not believe that this would help Serbia and added that this could put Serbia in a high risk situation.
The Serbian President conveyed that today's debate in the Serbian parliament on Kosovo-Metohija had been the most constructive one in the last 15 years, and urged MPs to vote for the government proposal on the ICJ ruling and Serbia's policy.
