Srdjan Djuric at today's press conference
Speaking with reporters at a regularly scheduled press conference today, Djuric said that this conference will be held in order to address growing interest in the region by German companies. As part of his visit to Berlin, Kostunica will meet with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, officials of the Bundestag and the Ministry of Economic Cooperation, as well as leading businesspeople in Germany.
Kostunica is due to meet with his Croatian counterpart Ivo Sanader in Belgrade to sign an agreement on the protection of minorities and discuss ways to improve business relations between the two countries, said Djuric. The meeting will also touch on a possible joint candidacy of Belgrade, Zagreb, Ljubljana and Sarajevo for the hosting of the world basketball championship in 2010, he added.
The head of the Office of Media Relations also noted that the government is putting great efforts into ensuring support, both in Belgrade and Kosovo, for its plan for the political solution to the situation in Kosovo-Metohija.
The activities are aimed at creating a joint position of Belgrade authorities and Kosovo Serbs and finding the best solution for the future of Kosovo Serbs and Serbia, Djuric explained.
He went on to say that the government expects the parliament to approve a 2005 budget bill, adding that the government has withdrawn several bills from parliamentary procedure to give lawmakers more time to discuss the budget proposal.
Since it took office eight months ago, the government has approved over 70 bills, 49 of which have been adopted in the parliament, Djuric recalled. The government has also forwarded a proposed draft constitution to the parliament and is making every effort to initiate a debate on the proposed act, he added.
Djuric expressed hope that the Montenegrin government will act in line with suggestions from the European Union and the provisions in the Constitutional Charter concerning direct elections of deputies to the Serbia-Montenegrin parliament. The Serbian government believes that the Montenegrin government will act in line with the suggestions, said Djuric, adding that Serbia is also ready to take part in discussions within the European Integration Council, aimed at accelerating accession to the European Union.
