EULEX has no mandate to prevent Serbian officials’ visits to province

State Secretary for Kosovo-Metohija Oliver Ivanovic, commenting on EULEX’s decision to ban unannounced visits by Serbian officials to Kosovo-Metohija, underlined that the EU mission does not have the mandate to do so.
Ivanovic told the Beta news agency that EULEX should instead combat terrorism and organised crime which are rife in the province.
He recalled that Serb returnees to the village of Zac were twice shot at from firearms and said that this is clearly an act of terrorism. However, EULEX did not bother much to look into this incident.
Ivanovic stressed that Serbian officials adhere to the procedure and announce their visits to the province in advance, explaining that they do not do so in order to be granted entry into the province, but in order to secure an escort.
Pristina daily Koha Ditore today reported the statement by EULEX spokeswoman Karin Limdal that following consultations with Brussels, the EU mission has issued a ban on all unannounced visits by Serbian officials to the province. The newspaper also reports that this refers to the north of the province as well.
