Serbia continues with policy founded on international law

Serbian President Boris Tadic said in New York, prior to a UN Security Council session on the situation in Kosovo-Metohija that Serbia will not recognise the independence of the southern province at any cost and will continue with policies founded on international law.

In a statement to Fonet news agency Tadic said that he will speak at the Security Council session about the on going procedure at the International Court of Justice to determine the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence, as well as the legal, political, diplomatic and security aspects of the issue of Kosovo-Metohija.

Tadic explained that recently there have been provocative statements by the representatives of Albanian institutions in Kosovo and in the region.

At this session, it will be very important to define the new security challenges that we are confronting together, said Tadic.

He said that the aim is to put a stop to provocations and to create a stable and peaceful environment for discussing the future status of Kosovo-Metohija.

Serbia will not in any way, neither implicit nor explicit, recognise the independence of Kosovo and will implement a constructive policy based on international law and diplomacy, stressed Tadic.

The Serbian President said that he will present Serbia’s position regarding the hindrances to visits by ministers and state officials to Kosovo-Metohija, the announced strategy for northern Kosovo which has been prepared by the Albanian institutions in Pristina, the return of refugees and the protection of religious and cultural heritage.

The upcoming session will also be an opportunity to talk about the regional aspect of security, said Tadic, adding that in this context, unrelated to the discussion on Kosovo-Metohija, he will mention the statement of outgoing Croatian President Stjepan Mesic about the possible use of military force in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

This is a dangerous and provocative statement, said Tadic, concluding that no one should be allowed to mention any kind of use of military force and to evoke war and conflict in the Balkans, particularly following the tragic experiences which we went through together during the 90s from which we are still recovering.
