Serbian Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Zoran Loncar, who is on a visit to Zagreb for a two-day ministerial conference on effective democratic governance at the local and regional level, told the Serbian government’s official website that the discussion so far has acknowledged that the Serbian government’s objectives in the field of local governance are in line with accepted objectives of other member-countries of the Council of Europe.

Loncar recalled that the first step towards decentralisation of power will be the implementation of existing legislation on local self-government and added that the next step in building local democratic capacities should be to change Serbia’s constitution.
Loncar said that the governments of the region are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening local and regional governance structures, and allocating resources for capacity building on the local level.
