Conditions not present for Serbs to take part in upcoming Kosovo elections

Serbian Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Goran Bogdanovic said this evening that conditions are not present for Serbs to take part in the local elections in the province because they are being held in violation of Security Council Resolution 1244.
In a statement to B92 TV, Bogdanovic said that the authorities in Serbia will not deprive anyone of their democratic right to have elections but are sending out a very clear message that conditions are not right for Serbs to take part in the elections in Kosovo.
Serbs who take part in the elections should ask themselves if by their act they are helping Serbia safeguard Kosovo or hindering Serbia’s struggle to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, said Bogdanovic.
He explained that Serbs would have been asked to participate in the elections if they had been organised by a status neutral organisation, adding that for Serbia only those local bodies that were elected on May 11, 2007 are legitimate. Bogdanovic said that the Serbian government’s policy on Kosovo is a responsible and long term one and its aim is the survival of Serbs in Kosovo and the economic strengthening of Serb communities.
