Serbia fully prepared for UN General Assembly

Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Goran Bogdanovic today stated he is convinced that Serbia will gain a diplomatic victory regarding the preservation of its territorial integrity and sovereignty at the next UN General Assembly.

In an interview with the Tanjug news agency, Bogdanovic said that Serbia is ready to defend its stance over the Kosovo issue at the UN General Assembly, scheduled for September 25, and that Serbian President Boris Tadic will give firm arguments, based on international law, against Kosovo independence.

Serbia is very well prepared for the meeting and with the help of Russia, China and EU member states which have not recognised Kosovo independence, it will manage to defend its position and its internationally guaranteed rights, he said.

He pointed out that Morocco and Israel have recently expressed their view regarding Kosovo independence, and are on Serbia’s side.

The Minister stressed that the reports of the OSCE, NGOs and other international organisations in charge of protecting human rights in Kosovo-Metohija are also in Serbia’s favour.

Minister Bogdanovic is optimistic when it comes to the public hearing on the legality of the unilaterally declared Kosovo independence before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), to begin on December 1, and expects that the ICJ’s decision will be in the interest of both Serbia and the entire Western Balkans.

As for the protocol on cooperation between EULEX and the Serbian police the Minister stressed that the document is in the interest of all Serbian citizens, including those living in Kosovo-Metohija.

He recalled that the protocol envisages a joint fight against all types of crime, adding that the fact that the Pristina authorities oppose the implementation of this agreement proves that they do not want to suppress crime in the province.

Minister Bogdanovic explained that the technical agreement between EULEX and the Serbian police is in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
