Interior Ministry, EULEX Protocol does not regulate customs control

State Secretary of the Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija Oliver Ivanovic today stated that the setting up of customs control in the province is not an issue to be debated by Serbian representatives and EULEX.

Ivanovic told the Beta news agency that EULEX signed the Protocol on cooperation with the Serbian Ministry of the Interior but it does not cover customs control.
He explained that in order to have a legal right to act on customs matters, EULEX has to sign agreements with the Serbian Customs Administration and the judiciary. These remits must not be mixed because all these institutions have different jurisdictions, he added.
Ivanovic noted that the police Protocol does not regulate the issue of customs check points in any way, but concerns cooperation over the exchange of information regarding illegal border crossings, smuggling of drugs, weapons and humans, organised crime and terrorism.
The Protocol increases the safety of Serbs in Kosovo and Serbia as a whole and is also important for the visa liberalisation process, Ivanovic said, adding that there are no reasons why the Albanian side should reject the Protocol.
