New recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence must not be encouraged

Serbian President Boris Tadic today stated that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) must not be disturbed while it decides over the legality of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.

Addressing the 15th summit of heads of state and prime ministers from countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Tadic stressed that the court procedure must be carried out without any political influences, noting that no one should prejudge the ICJ or meddle in its work.
The President emphasised that further recognition of the province must not be encouraged nor pressure exerted on multilateral bodies to grant membership to the secessionist authorities from Pristina.
He noted that the declaration from the 15th meeting of NAM heads of states, which insists on the full respect of international law and emphasises the role of the ICJ in the process, corresponds with Serbia’s decision to react to its province’s declaration of independence in a peaceful manner and by diplomatic means.
Tadic recalled that thanks to the support of the majority of NAM countries, the UN General Assembly asked the ICJ for their advisory opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.
I am deeply grateful for the fact that most NAM countries did not recognise the ethnically motivated attempt by Kosovo authorities to dismember a portion of my country, Tadic stressed, adding that by respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia and other UN countries the values that bond us become stronger.
Thus we affirm the fundamental principles of international law as defined by the UN Charter and reaffirmed in the NAM principles.
The Serbian President today officially recommended that NAM’s 50th anniversary be marked in Belgrade, where the first summit of this organisation was held.
He pointed out that Serbia is the largest country from the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which was one of the founders of NAM, adding that the authorities in Belgrade will work on strengthening relations with non-aligned countries.
Global divisions dating back to the Cold War period have disappeared and Belgrade remains the connecting link between East and West, as well as North and South. Although Serbia is trying to enter the EU, it still supports NAM’s efforts regarding the democratisation of international relations and the respect of human rights, said Tadic.
Serbia has been granted an observer status in NAM and the Serbian delegation, headed by President Tadic, will hold a series of bilateral meetings in Sharm el-Sheikh.
The two-day summit will deal with international solidarity, peace, development and the global economic and financial crisis.
