Serbia was very successful at the Universiade with 19 medals won, including five gold medals. The event was announced officially closed by President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) George Killian.

The closing ceremony was also attended by Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Deputy Prime Minister and head of the Universiade organising committee Bozidar Djelic, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic, Education Minister Zarko Obradovic and Minister of Youth and Sports Snezana Samardzic-Markovic.

Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas handed over the Universiade flag to FISU President George Killian, who then presented it to the Acting Mayor of Shenzhen, where Universiade 2011 will be held.
I want to express my gratitude to you all, not only to the student participants from all around the world but also to Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic and to the members of the organising committee for their excellent organisation of this event, said Killian, who also specially praised the thousands of volunteers.
EU Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth Ján Figel stressed that they had all witnessed 12 fascinating days at the Universiade in Belgrade.
I congratulate all participants and the organising committee because they have upheld the motto of the Universiade, ‘perfection of the spirit and body’. You have many reasons to celebrate and can be justly proud of what you have achieved, said Figel.
