The donation is intended for schools Petar Prvi, Mihailo Petrovic Alasa and Ilija Bircanin, for the repair of roofs, floors, toilets and equipping of classrooms. The Japanese government's donation is very useful since the state budget has not allocated enough funds for concrete utility problems facing schools.
Ambassador Tanabe voiced hope that these funds will help improve conditions in these three schools, and additionally strengthen friendly ties between Japan and Serbia.
Since 2001, 32 projects in the field of education have been realised in Serbia-Montenegro, said Tanabe, 11 of which are in Belgrade. He concluded that human resources are the most important investment for national development and democracy.
As part of the Japanese government’s assistance programme, 69 projects for covering elementary needs of citizens in Serbia-Montenegro have been realised since 1998. Their total value stands at €2.8 million.
