Serbian Deputy Minister of Justice Branislav Bjelica met with United Nation's Commission on Human Rights Special Rapporteur Ambeyi Ligabo today to discuss the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
Bjelica said that the harmonisation of Serbia's criminal legislation with European and international standards will help improve the protection of basic human rights and freedoms in the country.
Ligabo expressed his concern at the fact that some 300 libel suits have been filed against reporters in Serbia, but welcomed the country's efforts to prepare changes and amendments to laws concerning the protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
