Proposed resolution on recognising Kosovo falls through at OIC ministerial meeting

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic said in Athens yesterday that at the ministerial meeting of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Damascus the resolution proposed by Saudi Arabia inviting Islamic countries to recognise Kosovo independence was not adopted.

Jeremic told the FoNet news agency that amendments to the proposed resolution were submitted by Syria, Egypt, Azerbaijan and some other OIC members, therefore the resolution that was adopted in the end does not call on the recognition of Kosovo and does not mention the issue of Kosovo’s statehood.
Jeremic said this is another important diplomatic victory for Serbia, adding that he expects that the pressure on Islamic and other countries to recognise Kosovo will continue, but stressed that Serbia will also keep striving to prevent that.
Just as we were successful in Damascus, we will be so in the future, Jeremic noted.
The OIC has 57 members, nine of which have recognised Kosovo.
