It was stressed at the donor conference that it is very important to continue existing projects in order to find lasting solutions for refugee problems, primarily for housing and integration programmes.
Serbian Commissioner for Refugees Vladimir Cucic said that there are 300,000 refugees in Serbia, which makes it the country with the largest number of refugees in Europe, adding that nearly 6200 people, who need to be integrated into society, are still living in centers for refugees.
Cucic stressed that efforts to find lasting solutions and to reduce the number of refugees are directly linked to property rights, pension rights and other legal issues which must be resolved in order to carry out integration programmes.
UN High Refugee Commissioner in Serbia Lenart Kotsalainen pointed to the importance of resolving the problem of refugees in Serbia, adding that the provision of funds for the realisation of refugee projects is one of the UNHCR top priorities.
The meeting was attended by representatives from 23 embassies in Belgrade, the European Commission, the Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic’s cabinet and the Serbian Red Cross.
At the UNHCR summit, held last December in Geneva, Minister Krkobabic and UN High Refugee Commissioner Antonio Guterres concluded that it is necessary to organise a donor conference in order to collect funds to permanently solve refugee problems, concludes the statement.
