Serbia opposes formation of Kosovo security forces

Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Goran Bogdanovic today said that Serbia and Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija are opposed to the formation of Kosovo security forces, especially multiethnic ones.
Speaking on RTV B92 about the announced formation of provisional self-government institutions in the province, Bogdanovic said that security forces with 2,500 active members and 800 reservists armed with light firearms are to begin work on January 21, adding that at the moment there is no need for setting up such armed forces.
He said these forces are the same as the infamous Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), whose members turned their duties over to the Kosovo Protection Corps, who in turn handed them over to the newly-formed Kosovo security forces.
The Minister stressed it is necessary to demilitarise the entire region of Kosovo-Metohija as that is the only way to ensure proper safety, not only in the southern Serbian province, but also in the entire region.
Bogdanovic announced that at meetings with the international community and the EU he will draw their attention to the dangers of forming such forces which can only aggravate the situation in the province.
Speaking about diplomatic and legal mechanisms for fighting the formation of these forces, the Minister warned that this is a violation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, according to which Kfor is the only armed entity in the southern Serbian province.
He voiced Serbia’s readiness to start talks with UNMIK and EULEX with the aim of realising the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s six-item plan, adopted by the UN Security Council, because these six items are indispensable for the survival of Serbs and other non-ethnic Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija.
