Loncar explained that the government signed this agreement with the aim of continuing the decentralisation of powers in Serbia, adding that the new authorities who win the forthcoming local elections will be able to use this project strategically.
The European Union (EU) earmarked €11.4 million of direct assistance for 15 municipalities in Eastern Serbia in order to improve their infrastructure, offer better service to the citizens and secure economic development.
The assistance programme will be implemented by September 2005 in the following municipalities: Kladovo, Majdanpek, Negotin, Bor, Zajecar, Knjazevac, Sokobanja, Boljevac, Svrljig, Pirot, Babusnica, Bela Palanka, Dimitrovgrad, Vlasotince and Crna Trava.
The whole programme includes 67 projects whose total value amounts to €17 million, €11.4 million of which was provided by the EU, while the municipalities will allocate the remaining €5.6 million.
