Serbian Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic met today with US Steel Serbia’s general manager, Thomas Kelly, and Smederevo’s mayor, Slobodan Miladinovic, to discuss the relocation of the old port and railroad in Smederevo.
Ilic said that US Steel Serbia has been increasing production every day and that the output will double when a new furnace is commissioned. He added that company now needs around 150 railway freight cars on top of those already being assembled in Nis-based machinery maker MIN.
According to him, in order to increase output a new port is needed. Currently the port cannot meet the needs of the company, which has already procured four new derricks in an investment worth EUR 10 million in the first stage. Ilic also said that it is impossible to attract foreign investors unless they are allowed to do business and boost production.
