Tomica Milosavljevic
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Milosavljevic said that there are 40 coronary units in Serbia adequately equipped for treating heart diseases, which are the leading cause of death, followed by cancer and pulmonary diseases.
He said that each new investment and outfitting of medical centres is a significant achievement, especially in light of the fact that Serbia sets aside only $120 per capita annually for medical services.
Milosavljevic announced that an additional 150 ambulances will be distributed across Serbia in the next few weeks. They will include all equipment necessary for giving emergency on-site medical help.
Since March 2003, $100 million has been set aside for investment in health. The World Bank has approved $20 million in loans, $50 million has been invested in 20 Serbian hospitals and $23 million for upgrading the heating systems in 16 medical centres, Milosavljevic said.
Minister Milosavljevic voiced his dissatisfaction with the fact that the radiotherapy unit has still not been completed, although the construction materials were bought two years ago.
He called on the media to keep an eye on the pace of the construction works. The Minister announced that he will use 30 ceremonial scissors to open the radiotherapy unit, a very important improvement for the city of Nis, the Tanjug news agency reported.
