Government to continue opposing all decisions contrary to Resolution 1244

The Serbian Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija stated that Assistant Minister for Kosovo-Metohija and President of the Coordinating Body Zvonimir Stevic met today in Belgrade with Director of the International Crisis Group Peter Palmer.

The statement says that Stevic reiterated the firm position of the Serbian government to continue the policy of opposing all documents and decisions not in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244 which justify the independence of the southern Serbian province. Therefore, the Serbian government will continue to strengthen institutions in Serbian settlements in Kosovo-Metohija for the welfare of all citizens in the province loyal to Serbia.

Apart from discussing the basic problems of security and freedom of movement, Stevic and Palmer also talked about the difficult position and everyday problems of non-ethnic Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija.

Stevic expressed concern about unemployment which is one of the main reasons why the young are leaving Kosovo-Metohija for Scandinavian countries.

He announced the formation of a special strategy for employment which will contribute to the improvement of living standards and encourage the youth to stay in their own country.

They talked about the problem of buying and selling Serbian property in the province, which should be solved systematically by ensuring better living conditions for Serbs and the return of internally displaced persons.

They also discussed the issue of providing electricity for the upcoming heating season. The provision of funds for heating in primary and secondary schools in Kosovo-Metohija is one of the concrete solutions of the Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija and the Coordinating Body in this respect.

Stevic and Palmer concluded that they are to continue their intensive cooperation in order to provide better living and working conditions for Serbs and other non-ethnic Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija concludes the statement.
