Serbia expels Montenegrin ambassador

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic said this evening that Serbia has decided to expel the Montenegrin ambassador following Montenegro’s decision to recognise Kosovo.
In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Jeremic said that the Serbian government has decided to inform Podgorica that the presence of their diplomatic representative is no longer welcome in Serbia.
This is a step envisaged by the Serbian government’s action plan. We think that this is a suitable measure considering the fact that countries in the region have a special responsibility to preserve peace and stability in the Balkans, said the Minister.
He said that Montenegro’s decision to recognise Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence takes on an even worse aspect since the UN General Assembly adopted last night the Serbian resolution seeking an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legality of Kosovo’s independence.
This decision was made under pressure exerted by those whose ideas and viewpoints on the Kosovo issue were defeated at the voting in the UN General Assembly. Since these pressures bore weight with the Montenegrin government, we decided to take this step, said Jeremic.
We must show firmness and determination in defending our territorial integrity and sovereignty and following the voting at the UN General Assembly our reaction at any attempt at undermining of our territorial integrity will be a firm one, said the Foreign Minister.

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic said for the Tanjug news agency that Montenegro’s decision to recognise Kosovo was made under pressure, but Montenegro did not have to do so.
Dacic said that this move by Montenegro will result in lasting consequences for both countries and relations between the Serbian and Montenegrin people.
