Odds in favour of Serbia’s initiative at UN General Assembly

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic stated that Serbia’s initiative to ask the International Court of Justice for opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence has good chances of success and announced increased efforts to ensure the majority vote at the UN General Assembly.

In an interview for today’s edition of the Vecernje Novosti daily, Jeremic said that all odds are in favour of Serbia’s initiative at the UN.
In the upcoming days we will work intensively with everyone and pay special attention to countries which are known to be inclined to us so that we can be sure of their support, that is, their vote, said the Minister.
He warned that there is also strong resistance to Serbia’s initiative and that it may be expected that pressure from other sides also increases, which is why it is best not to predict the outcome of the vote.
However, the days ahead will be the final for which we will employ all resources in order to secure the majority at the UN General Assembly, he added.
Asked how the EU will vote, Jeremic said that according to all sources, if each EU member were to decide now and according to its own will, there would be more votes in favour of Serbia’s initiative than against it.
It will all depend on the EU’s internal agreement, and besides, anything can change before the vote actually begins, which is why it is not good to predict the outcome, said Jeremic.
Asked whether Serbia can oppose the alteration of its proposal, Jeremic said that this is exactly why Serbia’s approach to UN members is directed at garnering votes for the integral text of the resolution and against any amendments.
