Kosovo issue should be transferred from political to legal field

Serbian President Boris Tadic stated today before his trip to New York at the 63rd UN General Assembly session that he will try to gain support for the Kosovo issue to be transferred from the political to the legal field.

Tadic noted that we need broader support and noted that argumentation in the domain of international law is Serbia’s greatest strength.

The initiative to get an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice and the resolution Serbia is putting before the UN General Assembly are vitally important for the further process regarding the future status of Kosovo-Metohija, the President said.

That would enable us to find new ways and new capacities to start negotiations, and at the same time, we would have the opportunity to win over other countries that have not been on our side or at least to make them have a more flexible attitude about Serbia’s interests, Tadic said.

The President will meet with over 30 heads of delegations speaking at the General Assembly to discuss Serbia’s initiative and trying to win them over so that they vote for it at the session.

We will also discuss economic issues, investment opportunities, creating new jobs, Tadic said noting that this will also be an opportunity to discuss the future of the EULEX mission, which should also receive legitimacy by UN Security Council, the President’s press service reported.

The President said that the Serbian delegation will have constant bilateral meetings and battle for the interests of the state and Serbian citizens, adding that the state foreign policy at international forums is greatly approved by the vast majority of Serbian citizens. when setting forth Belgrade’s position.

We cannot and will not draw back from that policy, Tadic said noting that the policy which was supported by citizens of Serbia has full legitimacy at the talks in the UN Security Council and the General Assembly.
