Jeremic and Kouchner met as part of the intensive dialogue between Serbia and the EU which will resume today in Brussels at the top level during a meeting between Serbian President Boris Tadic and EU officials.
Jeremic and Kouchner discussed acceleration of Serbia’s EU accession process and specific steps that should be taken with that aim.
Jeremic informed his collocutor that Serbia has clearly shown willingness to cooperate with the Hague Tribunal and that consequently it expects the EU Council of Ministers to unblock the transitional agreement at its first upcoming session in mid-September.
We have France’s clear and unanimous support in that, said Jeremic to the Tanjug news agency following the meeting with Kouchner and the French President’s Chief Foreign Policy Advisor Jean-David Levitte.
Jeremic recalled that the EU will decide on this and other issues through a consensus, but stressed the importance and weight of the French vote, considering that France is currently holding the EU’s rotating presidency.
He said he agreed with Kouchner that France’s EU presidency should be used to help Serbia advance on its EU road.
Jeremic reiterated that Serbia does not accept Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence and will continue fighting to safeguard its territorial integrity and sovereignty with all legal and diplomatic means.
He informed Kouchner of Serbia’s intention to secure the support of the UN General Assembly to ask the International Court of Justice for its opinion on the legality of the province’s independence.
