Jeremic told Tanjug after meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and other Malaysian top officials in Kuala Lumpur that the process of recognising Kosovo by Malaysia is now frozen.
The Malaysian Prime Minister said that his country supports a peaceful and consensus-based solution of international conflicts and is dedicated to respect of international law. He expressed understanding for Serbia’s initiative to ask for ICJ’s opinion on the legality of independence, the Foreign Minister said.
Jeremic said that Badawi said that his country will decide whether to support Serbia in asking for opinion before the ICJ just before the UN General Assembly.
The fact that the procedure of recognising Kosovo is, however, very encouraging. I think that Malaysia will make further steps following the opinion by the ICJ, he noted.
Jeremic, who was in the first official meeting in Malaysia after 1991, said that Serbia will send its ambassador to Malaysia whereas Malaysia has already sent its ambassador to Belgrade.
Malaysia also decided to liberalise the visa regime for Serbian citizens, which is an important step in establishing closer ties that we discussed. They are very interested in the market of southeast Europe and economic cooperation, the Minister said.
Jeremic, who stayed in Beijing in the previous days as part of Serbia’s diplomatic offensive for getting a wide support for its initiative before the UN General Assembly, is going to Singapore tomorrow.
