Jeremic said that Egypt’s decision not to recognise Kosovo passports is in line with the policy conducted so far by this country which is influential in the Arab world. He added that he was given assurances that Egypt will continue to advocate Serbia’s position among its partners in the Arab League, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the African League and among Islamic countries.
Egypt will not recognise Kosovo’s independence, will work together with us on the international scene, make diplomatic efforts as it has done so far, especially in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, where many countries tried to present the issue of Kosovo-Metohija as a religious one and asked Muslim countries to recognise the independence of the southern Serbian province, Jeremic said.
He recalled that Egypt is a Muslim country, whose public is interested in the religious aspect of the Kosovo issue, and underlined that he told Abul-Gheit and the media in Cairo that the issue of Kosovo-Metohija is purely political and an ethnically motivated attempt of succession, in breach of the UN Security Council resolution.
The proof of that is the fact that not all Albanians are Muslims and that Serbia is a multiethnic country, with a government that has two Muslim ministers.
Jeremic and the Egyptian foreign minister also talked about the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly at which Serbia plans to seek support for requesting that the International Court of Justice examine the legitimacy of the unilaterally proclaimed independence of Kosovo-Metohija.
Egypt will decide on this issue after consultations with its Arab partners since they always try to take a unified stance on all issues in the UN General Assembly, Jeremic explained.
